The Great Unknown
Starting any process that is new to you causes a certain level of stress and anxiety because of the unknowns. I receive a lot of phone calls from potential clients that have no idea where to start because they’ve never worked with an architect before or completed a construction project.
Think back to when you decided to purchase your first home, most likely, you didn’t even know where to start with finding a realtor, it’s a big step. Completing a renovation or addition project is no different. There’s a lot of unknowns and uncertainties because it’s something most people have no experience with. If you ever decide to take this step into unchartered waters, I recommend meeting with 2-4 architects to find one that aligns with what you are trying to accomplish. I’ve created a list of questions to help you know what to ask an architect before hiring them. It is important to ask the potential architects as many of these questions as possible to ensure they are the best fit for you and your project. If you ever decide to take on a renovation or addition project, or even if you decide to build a new home, I hope this eases your concerns so you can enjoy the entire process.
- What is your design approach or philosophy?
- Why is this your passion?
- What is your timeline for architectural services and what is your backlog?
- Have you worked in my area and are you familiar with the architectural review board,
zoning board, and building department? - Can you show me examples of your work that are similar to my upcoming project?
- What is your fee structure?
- What level of detail will be provided in the drawings?
- What are the client’s responsibilities for the project?
- Do you have contractors that you work with for this type of project that you can refer?
- What are unknown circumstances that could occur during construction?
- What are the options for architectural services during the construction phase?
A good architect will also ask you a lot of questions and will listen closely to your answers. They will help you solidify your goals and desires, and translate them into a home that aligns perfectly with your lifestyle.
Creating your very own retreat that brings you and your family happiness, joy and love, and allows you to renew your body and spirit. Look for a good listener and you will find a good architect.
